Channel availability lets you decide where each selling plan is offered, with a Dashboard toggle and a Customer portal toggle on every plan in the selling plan editor.
Most catalogs accumulate a plan nobody wants to sell anymore, the legacy six-week interval or the odd promo cadence, and the only reason it's still there is that a few hundred subscribers are on it and deleting it would mean touching every one of them. Now you turn it off for the channel where it shouldn't appear, and it stops being offered as a new choice: hidden in the CPv3 add and swap pickers, hidden in edit frequency on both the portal and the subscription detail page, and skipped when Add products resolves a price, which falls through to the next available plan instead. Everyone already on that plan keeps it. Their subscription lines are never rewritten, their detail page loads the same way it always did, and when they go to change frequency their own current interval is still right there, because the filter blocks new selections rather than migrating anyone off anything. The plan stays listed and editable, so turning it back on is one toggle. Every catalog collects plans it has outgrown, and the merchant instinct is to leave them alone because cleaning them up feels like it risks live revenue.
This makes retiring a plan a decision about where it shows up, not a decision about who you're willing to disturb.
